Through captivating narratives marked by expressive traits and vibrant colors, the ANIMES genre explores deep emotions and existential questions, ranging from mythological beliefs to contemporary challenges. It is no surprise that this genre has garnered a massive fanbase, transcending cultural, age, and linguistic boundaries.
In collaboration with the Sociedade Brasileira de Psicanálise de Porto Alegre via the Child and Adolescent Nucleus, the Instituto Ling presents the Cine Anime, a project aimed at discussing the richness of Japanese animated film scripts in the context of subjectivity, focusing on symbolic issues and exploring themes such as emotional maturation and intergenerational dialogue.
For the final edition in 2024, the discussion will center around "Grave of the Fireflies," a film adaptation of the work by novelist Akiyuki Nosaka, published in 1967 and released by Studio Ghibli in 1988, directed by Isao Takahata.
The story takes place during World War II and follows the tragic journey of two siblings, Seita and Setsuko, as they struggle for survival after losing their parents and homes to bombings in Japan. The narrative delves into the vulnerability and innocence of children in the face of war's horrors. Seita, a teenager, takes on the responsibility of caring for his younger sister, Setsuko, amid extreme scarcity and social neglect. Seeking refuge in a cave and relying on limited resources, the two strive to maintain their bond and hope amid devastation, with fireflies serving as a metaphor for the transience of life and the enduring beauty amidst adversities. The film Grave of the Fireflies is widely regarded as a masterpiece of animated cinema, noted for its poignant and realistic portrayal of the impacts of war on the innocent.
The session will be coordinated by Júlio Sperb, a psychoanalyst and anime enthusiast, alongside guests Eluza Nardino Enck, a psychoanalyst, and Fabiano Pandolfi, an animator and film director.
