The term “Supertuscan” encompasses a category of innovative wines that surfaced during the 1970s and 1980s, as adventurous producers broke away from the conventional DOC regulations of Tuscany.
Rather than adhering strictly to native grapes like Sangiovese, these winemakers embraced international varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, and Cabernet Franc, or produced exceptional 100% Sangiovese wines.
Initially categorized as mere “table wines,” many of these selections rapidly earned global recognition and significantly influenced Italy’s wine legislation.
This tasting will showcase a curated selection of Supertuscans, primarily highlighting mono-varietal wines which reveal the true essence of each grape.
The featured wines for tasting include:
1) Isole e Olena: Cepparello 1996 – 100% Sangiovese
2) Fontodi: Syrah 2015 – 100% Syrah
3) Le Macchiole: Paleo 2017 – 100% Cabernet Franc
4) Castellare di Castellina: Poggio ai Merli 2016 – 100% Merlot
5) Tenuta dell’Ornellaia: Ornellaia 2010 – Bordeaux-style blend
